One of the places that I had really wanted to see, because of my long-standing interest in the Anglo-Boer war, was the controversial Voortrekker Monument. Completed in 1949 after 11 years of work it is a sombre, pepper-pot of a structure, dominating the landscape for miles around. It is of particular significance to Afrikaners as it was built to commemorate

Up early, bags packed, and off on the long run up to Pretoria, about 1000 miles to the north east with one planned stop at Colesberg, roughly halfway there. And it was 36 degrees centigrade in the Karoo. We, Theo that is, decided to run east first before turning north. I travelled up front with him in the substantial camper- type vehicle and Terence sat in the back giving out such opinions as he thought fit. For example, that such and such a person had been dropped on his head when very young and he had “come round” but hadn’t “come right.” And volunteering the information that, “some people are wise, others are otherwise.” You get the picture?
